In a controversial move, U.S. authorities have auctioned off the seized Russian oil tanker Bella 1 at a price significantly lower than its market value, a sale described as “economically irrational” by the vessel’s owner, Burevestmarin LLC. This transaction was reportedly aimed at preventing the owner from reclaiming the ship, as indicated in recent court filings.

Details of the Seizure

The Bella 1 was captured by the U.S. military in January during a lengthy pursuit in the North Atlantic. Authorities allege that the tanker was transporting illegal Iranian oil when it attempted to evade an American blockade en route to Venezuela. However, Burevestmarin LLC’s legal representatives contest these accusations, asserting that the vessel was not engaged in illicit activity.

Sale and Valuation Dispute

According to legal documents, the ship was sold to a maritime scrap dealer for $9.1 million, a figure they argue does not reflect its actual worth as scrap metal, which is estimated to be about $21 million. Furthermore, Burevestmarin’s attorneys maintain that the vessel possesses “substantially greater value” as an operational commercial entity.

Allegations of Unfair Practices

In their court filings, the owners criticized the sale process, claiming it was conducted “behind closed doors” and lacked proper notification to interested parties. They argue that the U.S. government’s approach in this situation represents a conflict of interest and an unreasonable attempt to expedite a sale for its convenience.

Next Steps

The Justice Department has been ordered to respond to these allegations by 9 a.m. on the upcoming Friday. As of now, representatives from both the department and the scrap dealership have not provided comments regarding the matter.
