The ongoing race for a Texas Senate seat is heating up, with Democrats believing they have a significant opportunity this election cycle. However, Democratic state Representative James Talarico is facing challenges as he recovers from the flu, which has kept him off the campaign trail for the past 12 days.
According to his campaign, Talarico is expected to return to campaigning over the weekend. His absence has raised concerns as he had last participated in an in-person event on September 26, before traveling to New York for a private fundraiser three days later. Following a brief stint back in Dallas, he visited urgent care and began focusing on recovery.
This situation has provided ammunition for his opponent, Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has openly questioned Talarico’s absence, urging him to provide a recent photo with today’s date to prove he is fit to continue campaigning. “We have a simple request: proof of life,” said Madison Cercy, a spokesperson for the Paxton campaign. She added, “If James Talarico is too fragile to face Texans, he has no business asking for their vote.”
While some within the Texas Democratic community express concern about Talarico’s timing, others encourage patience. “He’s like, really sick. Believe me, we don’t want this right now,” remarked a Texas Democrat involved with the Talarico campaign. On the other hand, Talarico’s spokesperson, JT Ennis, highlighted that having held over 100 events and engaged with thousands of voters, Talarico’s campaign can still reach voters through significant ad spending. “Ken Paxton has been ignoring Texans this entire campaign,” said Ennis.
Despite Talarico’s absence from the trail, political strategist Ed Espinoza noted that the extensive ad campaign, reportedly worth $80 million, is maintaining visibility for the candidate. He mentioned, “Look, he’s got like $80 million of ads going right now. So I think that’s pretty good scale for him at the moment.”
Reactions from Democratic leaders echo a similar sentiment. Kendall Scudder, chair of the Texas Democratic Party, acknowledged that while Paxton has gained some ground due to Talarico’s absence, the focus should remain on Talarico’s health. “It’s certainly not ideal, but we want to make sure he does everything he needs to be healthy and ready to go,” Scudder stated.
In a twist of fate, Talarico has benefited from distractions surrounding Paxton, who is facing scrutiny from recent audio recordings where he criticized past political events. Both Paxton and former President Trump have seized the opportunity to target Talarico over his inactivity. At a recent rally, Trump remarked, “You haven’t seen him in a couple of weeks,” mocking Talarico’s absence and suggesting he should participate in a debate with Paxton.
Talarico has responded to the call for a debate via social media, stating, “President Trump just said Ken Paxton should debate. I agree. Ball’s in your court @KenPaxtonTX.” This statement reflects Talarico’s willingness to engage directly with Paxton, reinforcing his commitment to the race while he recuperates.
As Talarico prepares to resume campaigning, the Texas Senate race remains highly competitive, with both candidates leveraging unique strategies as they approach the election.
