Recent analyses indicate that Bitcoin (BTC) is encountering significant resistance at $77,700, a threshold above its current trading value that could pose challenges for recent buyers who now face total losses.
Resistance at $77,700: A Critical Threshold for Bitcoin
According to data from the on-chain analytics platform CryptoQuant, Bitcoin’s recent trading patterns suggest it is currently below the realized price—often referred to as the cost basis—set by investors who entered the market in the past one to three months. This scenario highlights potential bearish pressure as this cost basis stands at $77,700, while Bitcoin trades near $76,500.
Investors who typically engage in speculative trading are particularly sensitive to short-term price movements. As highlighted by contributors from CryptoQuant, this cost base serves as a traditional support level during bullish market phases. However, should Bitcoin dip below $77,700, it could turn into a new resistance point, as traders might look to exit when the price returns to breakeven.
Notably, while Bitcoin has experienced a correction, the realized prices for many traders have been steadily increasing. The gap between the current market price and the cost basis has diminished considerably, reflecting the market’s tightening conditions.
The first major support zone appears to be at approximately $68,400, corresponding to a 12% net loss for buyers at the lowest cost basis. Historically, the last recorded dip below this band occurred in early June, followed by a recovery that saw prices deviate roughly 12.6% lower over the subsequent month.

Challenges for Short-Term Bitcoin Holders
In addition to the resistance at $77,700, Bitcoin is nearing the realized price for a broader segment of investors known as short-term holders (STH). These individuals have retained their Bitcoin holdings for up to 155 days and have a cost basis of approximately $75,832, as of Tuesday. This scenario reflects a market value-to-realized value (MVRV) ratio of 1.012, indicating the market value of STH coins in relation to their last on-chain transaction price.
This MVRV ratio indicates a critical psychological threshold. Should the trading price fall below the break-even point, the next significant support level would be identified at an MVRV ratio of 0.85. This area is often described as one of “tactical surrender” or a “short trap.” Moreover, the last instance of BTC/USD trading beneath the 0.85 MVRV level occurred in early June before the price recovered by mid-August.
