Rebutting Past Remarks

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer addressed former First Lady Michelle Obama’s assertion that the U.S. electorate may not be prepared to elect a woman as president. In an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Whitmer voiced her dissent, emphasizing that numerous Democratic governors could be viable presidential candidates.

“I’ve heard a lot of my colleagues say, ‘You can’t have this person or that person,’” she remarked, expressing confidence in the Democratic party’s potential for the upcoming 2028 presidential election. Whitmer specifically mentioned two Republicans likely to enter the race—Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio—stating, “I would put my money on any Democratic governor in the country against them.”

On the Possibility of a Female Candidate

When queried about the chance of a female candidate being the most effective opponent against a GOP nominee, Whitmer replied firmly, “I do.” This confidence comes in the context of discussions surrounding potential female leadership in the Democratic Party, especially as figures like Whitmer and former Vice President Kamala Harris emerge in speculations about the 2028 primary.

Exploring Future Options

While Whitmer has not confirmed her presidential aspirations, she indicated that her decision will follow her gubernatorial term, which concludes in January 2024. In a previous statement, she had denied intentions to run for president but later seemed to reconsider her stance, saying, “I never thought I would run for governor. So I guess I should know better than to never say never.”

Rallying Support for Party Candidates

In addition to contemplating her political future, Whitmer took the opportunity to express support for Amy Acton, the Democratic governor nominee in Ohio. Acton has faced considerable challenges, including negative advertisement campaigns by her opponent, GOP businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, which have drawn criticism from various factions, including within the Republican party itself.

“What’s happened to her in Ohio is absolutely abhorrent,” said Whitmer, emphasizing the importance of electing leaders committed to supporting victims of abuse. “Any survivor knows there’s always a backlash,” she added, advocating for strong leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the community.

Bipartisan Condemnation

The backlash against Ramaswamy’s campaign tactics has been notable, with bipartisan voices expressing disapproval, including Ohio GOP Senator Jon Husted, who is currently engaged in a competitive re-election race. This illustrates the rising concern over the treatment of candidates, particularly women, in the political arena.
