Artificial intelligence is quietly changing every corner of modern life. From how to search the web, to how to invest, learn and vote, AI models have come to mediate some of the most important decisions. But behind the growing convenience there is deeper and more urgent concern. The public is not aware of how these models work, are trained, or who will benefit.

This is deja vu.

We have experienced this on social media before, commissioning a small group of businesses with unprecedented power over public discourse. This led to algorithm opacity, monetized rage, and erosion of shared reality. This time, it’s not just our feed, but our decision-making systems, legal frameworks, and core institutions.

And we walk there with our eyes closed wide.

A centralized future is already in its shape

Today’s AI landscape is dominated by a handful of powerful labs operating in closed rooms. These companies train large models on large datasets covered from the internet, sometimes without consent, and release them with products that form billions of digital interactions every day. These models are not open to scrutiny. The data is not auditable. The outcome is not accountable.

This centralization is more than just a technical issue. It’s political and economic. The future of cognition is built into a black box, gated behind a legal firewall, and optimized for shareholder value. As AI systems become more autonomous and embedded in society, we risk turning important public infrastructure into private engines.

The question is not whether AI will transform society. I already have it. The real question is whether to say what the transformation will unfold.

For distributed AI

However, there is an alternative path. This is something that has already been investigated by communities, researchers and developers around the world.

Rather than strengthening closed ecosystems, this move suggests that design will allow for transparency, distributed governance and create AI systems that will be responsible for those who power them. This shift requires more than technological innovation. This calls for a cultural reorganization of ownership, recognition and collective responsibility.

In such models, the data is not merely extracted and monetized without recognition. It is contributed, verified and governed by the people who produce it. Contributors can earn recognition or rewards. Validators become stakeholders. Additionally, systems evolve with general surveillance rather than one-sided control.

These approaches are still in the early stages of development, but point to a fundamentally different future. This is where intelligence flows peer-to-peer rather than top-down.

Why can’t you wait for transparency?

AI infrastructure integration is happening at a fierce speed. Trillion dollar companies are racing to build vertically integrated pipelines. The government has proposed regulations but it is struggling to keep up. Meanwhile, trust in AI is shaking. A recent Edelman report found that only 35% of Americans trust AI companies, a massive decline in the past.

This crisis of trust is no surprise. How can they not understand, cannot audit, cannot rely on, and cannot rely on?

The only sustainable antidote is transparency across all layers, not just the model itself, but also from how data is collected, to how the model is trained, to who benefits. Power Dynamic can be re-adjusted by supporting open infrastructure and building a co-framework for attribution.

This is not to stall innovation. It’s about shaping it.

What does shared ownership look like?

Building a transparent AI economy requires more rethinking than a codebase. This means reexamining the incentives that have defined the technology industry over the past 20 years.

The future of more democratic AI may include public ledgers that track how data contributions will affect impacts, model updates and deployment decisions, contributors, trainers, validators, and how they will affect economic participation in federal training systems that reflect local values and contexts.

They are the starting point for the future where AI answers not only capital but community.

The clock is ticking

There are still options as to how this unfolds. We have already seen what happens when we abandon digital agents to centralized platforms. With AI, the results are even more broad and less reversible.

If we want a future in which intelligence is a shared public good rather than a private property, we need to start building an open, auditable, and fair system.

It starts with asking a simple question: Who should AI serve in the end?

Ram Kumar

Ram Kumar The core contributors of OpenLedger, a new economic layer of AI where data contributors, model builders and application developers are recognized and rewarded for the value they ultimately create. With extensive experience with billion-dollar enterprise accounts, RAM has worked well with global giants such as Walmart, Sony, GSK and The LA Times.
