Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin scored his 894th career goal on Friday, tying the record for NHL legend Weigletsky with the most goals in league history.
Ovechkin achieved record goals against the Chicago Black Hawks in its third term.
As the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL entry draft, Ovechkin entered the league as a highly promoted prospect and fulfilled his promise to be an offensive force. In addition to tying Gretzky’s career marks, Ovechkin holds many other scoring records, including most power play targets, most overtime targets, and the most goals scored on a single team.
Ovechkin, third in the NHL with goals this season, has won nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophys, the top goal getter of the season and won the league awards.
Washington has not surpassed the first round of the playoffs since winning the Cup, but this season the capital is number one in the Eastern Conference and second in the NHL overall.
Ovechkin, 39, has been playing professionally since 2001. His contract with Washington will take place throughout the 2025-26 season.
