In the wake of significant criticism, President Donald Trump addressed controversial statements he made earlier this week regarding Iran’s capability to target major U.S. cities. His initial remarks, made during a campaign rally in Nebraska, implied that Iran could potentially attack urban areas if it were to acquire nuclear weapons.

During the rally, Trump told the audience, “They can take out a city. Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego,” which was met with applause from his supporters. His comments raised eyebrows and provoked backlash, particularly from Democratic leaders in California.

At a subsequent rally in San Antonio, Trump attempted to clarify his previous statements, discussing the broader context of the U.S. stance toward Iran. He emphasized that if Iran were to launch an attack on American cities, the consequences would be dire. He stated, “You want to see problems? Let them hit a missile into San Diego or Los Angeles on the way. Let them hit. You want to see a horror show? You want to see problems?”

Reaffirming his commitment to protecting the nation, Trump added, “We’re not going to let that happen. We protect our cities. We protect our country.” This insistence on national security was likely an effort to mitigate the fallout from his earlier remarks.

California Governor Gavin Newsom responded to Trump’s initial comments, characterizing them as reckless and even dangerous, saying the President was inciting foreign adversaries against the United States.

The San Antonio rally, which lasted approximately one hour and 45 minutes, was marked by interruptions from protesters. A notable incident occurred when a protester was forcibly confronted by an audience member, drawing attention to tense interactions at the event.

Trump’s remarks were also aimed at rallying support for Texas Republicans, including Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is in a closely contested Senate race against Democrat James Talarico. Despite the rally’s intent, Governor Greg Abbott, a Trump ally, cited scheduling conflicts that prevented him from attending.

At the conclusion of the rally, Trump took the opportunity to announce that he would present former Major League Baseball star Rogers Clemens with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Trump highlighted Clemens’ athletic achievements and commitment to the sport, stating, “We’re giving him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and along with the Congressional Medal of Honor, it’s the highest award bestowed upon anyone.” Clemens, who has faced accusations of performance-enhancing drug use yet maintains his innocence, expressed his gratitude for the honor, stating it surpassed any recognition he had received during his playing career.

Clemens remarked, “To get it from this man, this president, there wouldn’t be another president I’d want to get it from,” underscoring the significance of the moment for him.
