Former President Donald Trump announced a significant plan on his Truth Social platform regarding the redevelopment of the East Potomac Golf Links, a golf course located in Washington, D.C. This course has been embroiled in legal disputes related to Trump’s proposed renovations.

In his recent post, Trump stated that the U.S. Department of the Interior collaborated with renowned golf course architect Tom Fazio to create a vision for a “World Class Championship Golf Course” at the current location of East Potomac Golf Links.

“When completed, it will be open to the Public while, at the same time, designed to the Highest Level of Golf and able to hold World Class Tournaments such as the U.S. Open, the PGA Championship, the Ryder Cup, and the Presidents Cup,” Trump elaborated in his announcement.

The renovations are scheduled to kick off on November 15 and are projected to last around 15 months. However, the proposed changes have already faced opposition, with a preservation group and two local residents challenging the plans in court.

Following Trump’s announcement on Truth Social, U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes called for the administration to clarify whether it maintains its position that there is no “final agency action” regarding the golf course renovations, describing Trump’s plans as merely “preliminary.” Legal representatives from the Justice Department have previously insisted that ambitions for transforming East Potomac into a championship course remain largely hypothetical and lack specific formal arrangements.

National Park Service officials have echoed this sentiment, stating to Judge Reyes that they have not seen any formal proposal for the course renovations beyond the initial communications from both Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum and Trump’s social media updates.

In a related court order, Judge Reyes prohibited further tree removals from the golf course until October 26, citing discontent with the administration’s actions after it cut down hundreds of trees. “I was hearing from everyone on plaintiffs’ side this was going to happen. I said repeatedly, ‘No, I trust the government,’” she reacted, expressing her frustration over the situation.

Reyes emphasized that the incident has damaged the government’s credibility, stipulating a requirement for the administration to provide three business days’ written notice ahead of making any significant modifications to the golf course. Though she initially rejected the plaintiffs’ request for a restraining order, she acknowledged the need for transparency in upcoming work.

Recently, the administration sought Reyes’s recusal from the case, arguing that her behavior in earlier hearings demonstrated a loss of impartiality. A hearing has been scheduled for Monday, where Reyes has mandated the acting director of the National Park Service and the chief of staff of the Interior Department to testify under oath. Additionally, Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward is also required to attend.

In his Truth Social statement, Trump characterized the existing course as “old, broken, dilapidated, and of no further use or effect.” This golf course redevelopment is part of a broader series of initiatives Trump has pursued to modify the D.C. landscape, which includes ongoing efforts to build the White House ballroom and plans for a “triumphal arch.” Moreover, his administration has worked on renovations for the Kennedy Center and assessed plans for the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, despite facing challenges, such as issues with the pool’s lining.
