U.S. Treasury’s Bold Moves Against Iranian Cryptocurrency Usage

On Thursday, December 14, 2023, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to seize an estimated $1 billion in cryptocurrencies linked to Iran. Speaking at Newsmax’s NPolicy Summit in Washington, D.C., Bessent highlighted the effectiveness of economic sanctions imposed against certain Middle Eastern nations.

Iran has reportedly turned to cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, as a means to evade U.S. sanctions. Bessent revealed that U.S. authorities are actively targeting the crypto wallets connected to the Iranian government to disrupt these efforts. “What we’ve done is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before,” Bessent remarked regarding the current sanctions on Iran.

The Treasury Secretary stated that the U.S. is prepared to confiscate significant amounts of cryptocurrency in the near future. “We’re probably going to seize $1 billion in cryptocurrencies this week,” Bessent noted, affirming that the U.S. knows the locations of these assets and is working to quarantine them. He further emphasized the strategic approach of combining a maximum pressure campaign with ongoing isolation efforts against Iran.

While Bessent did not specify which cryptocurrencies would be targeted in the seizure, he noted that Bitcoin’s decentralized nature poses challenges for freezing assets. On the other hand, he indicated that prior seizures included popular stablecoins, which can be more easily immobilized by authorities.

In recent developments, Iran has initiated a Bitcoin-backed insurance mechanism for its shipping industry, indicating a reliance on cryptocurrency for key economic activities. Additionally, it has been reported that the country is using Bitcoin to facilitate cross-border transactions via its state-supported cryptocurrency exchange, with guidelines from its central bank encouraging citizens to engage with the digital economy.

Since the beginning of the current administration, a renewed “maximum pressure” strategy has been in effect, with a National Security Memorandum signed in February 2025 reinforcing the commitment of the Treasury Department to combat Iranian financial networks associated with money laundering and sanctions evasion.
