Starknet, an Ethereum Layer 2 network, has launched a new feature aimed at enhancing user privacy while engaging with decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. This feature allows users to interact with DeFi services without their main wallet being publicly associated with their activities.
The development team at StarkWare has introduced a “shadow account” feature. This innovative approach generates distinct, consistent addresses tailored for each application. By utilizing shielded balances from the network’s STRK20 privacy pool, users can fund these shadow accounts, enabling them to manage loans, trades, and various DeFi operations under different on-chain identities.
While this new feature obscures the connection between shadow accounts and their funding wallets, Starknet has clarified that the balances, transactions, and positions maintained by these shadow accounts are still visible on the blockchain. This balance of privacy and transparency represents a nuanced approach to user data.
Users will find it easy to integrate this new functionality into their DeFi experiences. They can connect their wallets, toggle between public and private modes, and deposit assets directly into vaults associated with their shadow accounts. The shadow account will hold onto these assets until the user decides to withdraw funds and revert to their protected balance.
Starkware envisions that this privacy capability will extend beyond mere vaults; future integrations may involve services like liquidity provision, lending and borrowing, staking, trading of derivatives, prediction markets, and engagement in NFT marketplaces.
This initiative aligns with StarkWare’s larger effort to bolster blockchain privacy measures. The company previously rolled out the STRK20 privacy framework in June, facilitating private transactions and secure token balances on the Starknet network. In conjunction with this, StarkWare also unveiled its Private Know Your Customer (KYC) system, which allows users to verify their identities while maintaining privacy regarding their personal information.
