On Sunday, during an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” Senator Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, expressed concerns regarding President Donald Trump’s recent announcement about easing sanctions on Russia. The senator suggested that this action may potentially violate U.S. law.

Tillis remarked, “I do believe there’s a legitimate case for saying the president’s not following the law.” This statement came after Trump declared via a post on Truth Social that Russia would start supplying significant quantities of diesel fuel to the global market, a move that has faced backlash from Ukrainian authorities and critics of the Trump administration.

The context of this controversy lies in the steps taken by lawmakers post-Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which included a unanimous Senate bill in 2022 to prohibit Russian oil imports. However, Congress has not updated the legal framework following Trump’s announcement, which raises questions about its legality.

When asked by moderator Kristen Welker whether he believes the president’s actions constitute a legal breach, Tillis responded, “I believe that he may be.” He emphasized that Russia is the one instigating the aggression and underscored the need for the country to withdraw from occupied territories to end the conflict.

The senator highlighted the potential consequences of the president’s deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting, “It absolutely will,” referencing the risks posed to American lives due to Russia’s ties with Iran and its funding of mercenary groups.

With Tillis’s term nearing its end, he is facing increased scrutiny, especially as Democrats view his seat as a crucial target in the upcoming elections. Tillis has also been vocal about his discontent with aspects of the Trump administration, including his regrets over the confirmation of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who he criticized for inadequate leadership.

Additionally, Tillis condemned the Pentagon’s plans to publicly broadcast the execution of Nidal Hasan, known for the 2009 Fort Hood shooting. He argued that such actions could inadvertently glorify violence and serve as recruitment propaganda for terrorist organizations. He stated, “This is not who we are,” advocating for a more dignified approach to capital punishment.

The White House has not yet issued a response to Tillis’s statements as the political landscape continues to evolve, particularly around the contentious issue of U.S. relations with Russia.
