The expansion of Ripple’s institutional trading operations marks a significant shift into areas traditionally dominated by Wall Street prime brokers. The company, known for its digital assets XRP and RLUSD, has announced the launch of perpetual swaps for real-world assets through its prime brokerage service, Ripple Prime.
Introduction of Perpetual Swaps
With the recent developments, Ripple Prime now supports perpetual swaps on over 100 reference markets that span various asset categories, including stocks, ETFs, commodities such as metals and energy, currencies, and more. This service is designed to continuously operate, granting traders access to market opportunities outside of conventional trading hours, including weekends.
Enhanced Flexibility for Institutions
According to Ripple’s latest announcement, the brokerage will enable trading of swaps as a principal and will reference perpetual futures listed on Hyperliquid’s trade.xyz. This 24/7 trading capability aims to provide financial institutions with enhanced flexibility to adapt to market fluctuations and manage risks more effectively.
“Financial institutions want exposure to equities, commodities, and currencies with the 24-hour access and efficiency of digital infrastructure. Ripple Prime was built to operate in both worlds, with extensive experience clearing trades and managing digital collateral and risk across venues 24/7,” said Michael Higgins, International CEO of Ripple Prime.
Benefits of RWA Swaps
The RWA Swap feature allows clients to implement more complex trading strategies and efficiently manage their portfolios in a rapidly evolving global marketplace. Additionally, clients can cross-margin RWA swap positions with other asset classes supported by Ripple Prime, utilizing RLUSD as collateral. This integrated approach simplifies exposure management by centralizing margin and risk across an institution’s entire portfolio.
Ripple Prime’s Growing Wall Street Presence
In a continued push to extend its reach into the financial services sector, Ripple Prime has intensified its collaboration with Brevan Howard, a leading investment management firm, to offer a wider range of multi-asset prime brokerage services. Further, Ripple has recently taken steps into leveraged ETF swap financing, seeking to penetrate a market sphere that has historically been the forte of major banking institutions.
This strategic expansion follows Ripple’s substantial acquisition and rebranding of Hidden Road as Ripple Prime, a move amounting to $1.25 billion. These initiatives underscore Ripple’s commitment to blending fiat and digital asset trading solutions, catering to the evolving demands of the financial community.
