Netflix has announced significant layoffs, impacting approximately 1,000 employees, which amounts to about 6% of its workforce. This decision was communicated internally on Wednesday, as part of the streaming giant’s effort to streamline operations.
Co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos emphasized the need for discipline in resource allocation to fulfill the company’s ambitious mission to entertain globally. In their message to staff, they stated that making focused choices is crucial to maintain the company’s commitments to its members, partners, employees, and investors.
The Wall Street Journal first reported the layoffs, with sources confirming the accuracy of this information. The majority of the job cuts will affect teams in product development, technology, legal, and human resources.
Despite being a leading player in the streaming industry, Netflix has faced challenges in enhancing viewer engagement. According to recent financial reports, the platform recorded over 97 billion hours of content viewed in the first half of 2026—a modest increase of 2% from the previous year. Sarandos acknowledged the need for more accelerated growth during a recent media conference, indicating, “Overall, we’re not growing as fast as I want us to, and we’re working on making that move faster.”
As Netflix prepares to release its third-quarter financial results, the company has been actively seeking ways to boost subscriber engagement, which includes introducing live sports and video podcasts through partnerships with entities like Bill Simmons’ The Ringer.
The layoffs at Netflix align with a broader industry trend, as various major studios aim to optimize operations and reduce expenses. For instance, The Walt Disney Company has already implemented substantial job cuts under its new CEO, Josh D’Amaro, while companies like Skydance are also expected to downsize their workforces in the wake of shifting market dynamics.
