The man was in a state of crisis after falling from the stands to the ground at the Pittsburgh Pirates Home Game held at PNC Park on Wednesday, officials said.
The man was tumbling into the air before landing in the warning track area on the right field during the seventh innings, stopping the game when the player appeared shocked.
He was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where he was in a state of crisis, a spokesman for the Pittsburgh Public Safety said.
“The Pittsburgh EMS, the Pirates and Cubs athletic training team and other PNC Park officials responded and responded immediately and managed their care,” Pirates said in a statement.
Those who witnessed the incident said it happened quickly and the man fell off a 21-foot wall.
“It was fast. I didn’t know if he jumped or fell,” Sam Miller said. EMS staff tied the man to a stretcher to hold him in place, Miller said.
Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen was one of the players who responded on the field due to the male-prone emergency medical responders. Fans reported on social media that the stadium was silent. “Think about his loved one and hold our family a little tonight, hope he pulls.
Detectives from the Pittsburgh Police Department’s Violent Crime Division are under investigation, Pittsburgh Public Safety said.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton asked people to keep the man in prayer after the match.
“Before we start, I just want to offer thoughts and prayers on events that took place early in the game,” he showed a video of Pittsburgh’s NBC affiliate WPXI at a post-game press conference.
Shelton also thanked EMS workers and medical staff from both teams for responding.
