On October 12, Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota experienced a significant disruption when federal agents conducted an early morning search of her home. This incident marks the first time Omar has detailed the stressful event, as she now feels compelled to relocate due to heightened safety concerns.
In her appearance on MS NOW, Omar recounted how she and her husband were startled awake around 6 a.m. by agents from Homeland Security Investigations. “You don’t show up to somebody’s house that early in the morning unless you were trying to freak them out,” Omar stated, reflecting on the chaotic nature of that morning.
The search was part of a criminal investigation that has raised eyebrows among legal experts, particularly given its timing ahead of the midterm elections. Sources familiar with the ongoing investigation suggest that potential charges against Omar could include conspiracy and making false statements on immigration documents.
Omar mentioned that she had only a few hours of sleep after a recent trip when the agents arrived, causing confusion and anxiety for her family. “I thought something was on fire. I thought something was happening to the neighbor,” she described her initial reaction to the loud banging at the front and back doors. Alongside Omar, her 20-year-old son was also present in the home during the search.
Upon response, Omar asked to see a warrant, which the agents provided. However, she declined to sign a paper that would waive certain rights afforded to her as a member of Congress, specifically protections under the Speech or Debate Clause of the Constitution. “I sat on the couch, staring at the warrant, trying to make sure that they were staying within the bounds of what the warrant allowed them to do,” she stated regarding her experience during the search, which lasted four to five hours.
During this time, the agents seized various items, amounting to 17 in total, including phones belonging to Omar and her daughter. Items belonging to her husband, Tim Mynett, were also taken, such as a family heirloom camera and his notebooks for learning Somali. Despite the disruption, Omar noted that the agents were courteous: “They did a really good job in putting everything back in its place,” she commented.
According to Omar, the search’s aftermath has left her unable to continue living at her Washington residence. With her address now public and considering the threats she faces, she expressed the necessity of relocating. “Obviously, I can’t continue to live there,” Omar affirmed, citing concerns for her family’s safety.
Omar also took the opportunity to refute claims made by former President Donald Trump, asserting that he is indeed connected to the investigation. “He’s got everything to do with it,” she claimed, referencing Trump’s historical criticisms of her since 2019, including calls for her deportation.
In conclusion, Omar remains steadfast in her beliefs, maintaining her innocence amid the allegations. “I feel confident in my truth,” she stated, highlighting her skepticism about the motives behind the investigation and asserting that the characters involved seem to be driven by a longstanding agenda against her.
