Hunter Biden, the son of former President Joe Biden, is now accepting Bitcoin as payment for his work on his official website.
The homepage of Hunter Biden’s official website, hunterbiden.com, features his signature large, bright flower painting, and the footer includes a simple but striking notice that reads “BITCOIN ACCEPTED” next to links to the site’s privacy policy, terms of use, and “Verisart certification.”
Verisart offers blockchain-based certificates of authenticity designed to permanently record the origin and ownership of both physical and digital works of art.
Mr. Biden’s art career has been dogged by politics from the beginning, with his first exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles fetching prices ranging from about $75,000 to $500,000, even though he is a novice painter.
Subsequent reports revealed that one of the prominent buyers, Democratic donor and Los Angeles real estate investor Elizabeth Hirsch Naftali, later received a presidential appointment from Joe Biden, sparking oversight hearings and accusations of influence over art sales.
A March 2025 court filing paints a very different picture of Biden’s current wealth. Biden told a federal judge that he is currently in “significant debt, in the millions of dollars,” and that he has only sold one painting for $36,000 since the end of 2023, after previously selling 27 works for an average of nearly $55,000.
He cited a collapse in art sales as the reason he could no longer afford to pursue some of the lawsuits surrounding the publication of material from the infamous laptop.
Hunter Biden: A life filled with addiction, tragedy and scandal
Hunter Biden’s controversy is rooted in a life marked by early trauma and a long struggle with addiction. He lost his mother and baby sister in a 1972 car accident that seriously injured him and his younger brother, Beau, and shaped the family’s story for decades.
As an adult, Hunter Biden has spoken candidly about his escalating battles with alcohol and crack cocaine and stints in multiple rehab facilities after Beau died of brain cancer in 2015.
Those conflicts became public through his divorce from Kathleen Buhl, who described repeated relapses and drug use, and later attracted intense media scrutiny through his controversial relationship with Beau’s widow, Harry Biden.
In 2018, Hunter Biden fathered a child with Landen Roberts, an Arkansas woman he initially claimed he did not know. DNA testing confirmed the parentage, sparking a long-running child support dispute frequently cited by Republican critics.
His overseas business dealings caused an even greater backlash. Hunter Biden joined the board of Ukrainian gas company Burisma in 2014, reportedly earning up to $1.2 million a year while his father ran Ukraine policy and also pursued business ventures with Chinese investors. Republicans argued these arrangements monetized access to Joe Biden.
The uproar intensified after files appearing to show negotiations over drug use and overseas deals surfaced from a laptop that Biden reportedly left behind at a repair shop in Delaware.
Federal prosecutors separately charged him with failing to pay more than $1.4 million in taxes and lying about drug use on a 2018 gun application. He was convicted of three felonies involving firearms in 2024 and later received a sweeping presidential pardon from his father.
