Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is facing a significant health challenge after being diagnosed with blood clots in both his lungs and leg, a situation confirmed by the team on Monday. This alarming diagnosis is likely to sideline the Super Bowl MVP for the remainder of the 2026 season.
Hurts last took the field on October 11, during a narrow 19-17 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. In the subsequent match against the Carolina Panthers, which ended in a 25-14 loss, he was absent due to his health issues.
Initially, Hurts was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis specifically in his left calf. However, following further examinations and continuous monitoring, the medical team established a more comprehensive diagnosis: a combination of deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. Fortunately, the team noted that he is currently clinically stable and does not exhibit significant functional limitations.
The treatment plan for Hurts includes the administration of blood thinners, which necessitates a complete break from all contact activities, including any football-related engagements, as stated by the Eagles. While no specific timeline has been provided for his potential return, it appears that a comeback in 2026 is highly unlikely.
In a statement regarding his prognosis, the Eagles expressed optimism, indicating, “We anticipate that he will have no long-term effect” from this condition, highlighting their confidence in a full recovery.
Hurts, who was most recently recognized as the MVP of Super Bowl 59 after leading the Eagles to a decisive 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on February 9, 2025, in New Orleans, now faces a critical period of recovery.
