The most harmful trends in cryptography continue to wreake havoc in the industry, increasing the severity of users and institutions each month.

Crime continues to evolve in complexity and type, making it increasingly difficult to respond quickly and minimize losses.

The number increases

Blockchain security company Peckshield released a report last month, revealing an unfortunate rise in crypto crime over the past two months. The survey results show that July lost $142 million in exploits, while August saw a 15% increase, marking a total loss of $163 million.

Btcturk, Türkiye’s largest crypto exchange, has followed, with over $50 million gone. This is also the second example of security vulnerabilities being exploited last year.

Reports say this is the worst this year for cryptocurrency hacks, and at this rate, losses are likely to exceed $4 billion by the end of 2025.

A personal wallet compromise represents an increase in the rate of theft, with over 23% of attacks linked to individual users annually.

“Wrenches” or physical attacks are also on the upward trend, and are closely following the price movement of Bitcoin, with this type of violence increasing during periods of price rise.

The highest casualties appear to be from the US, Germany, Russia and Canada, among several other countries.
