Coinbase, a leading cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, has announced upcoming scheduled maintenance that will affect its derivatives trading services. This maintenance is slated for October 24th and is expected to last around nine hours, during which both futures trading and perpetual futures trading on Coinbase Financial Markets will be suspended. However, the company assures users that account access will remain unchanged.
Maintenance Details
The scheduled downtime will allow Coinbase to perform necessary upgrades and improvements to its trading platform. Users have been encouraged to stay updated through the company’s official X account, where real-time updates will be provided, and on the Derivatives Status page for further information.
User Reactions
The announcement has elicited mixed reactions from the user community. While some users appreciate the transparency and the need for maintenance, others have voiced their concerns regarding the implications of the downtime. For instance, a user known as TriDung.sol expressed discontent regarding a potential adverse impact on trading activity, saying:
“We don’t want the price of Better Hope to move to a place where people bounce or miss out on epic trades. That would leave a lot of users frustrated. We also need to enable the option of multiple active trades so that we can hold short and long on the same asset at the same time.”
Additional Changes
In conjunction with the maintenance announcement, Coinbase has also revealed plans to delist the Ampleforth Governance Token (FORTH) effective November 23rd. The company reassured users that while trading of FORTH will cease, the funds will still be accessible and withdrawals will remain supported. Following this news, the value of affected digital assets dropped by approximately 15%, highlighting the liquidity concerns tied to the platform’s reputation.
Recent Regulatory Challenges
Coinbase is currently navigating various regulatory challenges across different jurisdictions. Recently, in Taiwan, access to the platform has been restricted ahead of the general elections scheduled for November 28th. Authorities have raised concerns that the platform could potentially facilitate illegal gambling activities during the elections, prompting a local court to impose access restrictions. Coinbase acknowledged the situation and is investigating the access issues for local users.
Similarly, the platform faces regulatory scrutiny in Kazakhstan, where a recent court ruling upheld the efforts of the Astana Financial Services Authority to limit the activities of several unlicensed cryptocurrency platforms, including Coinbase. According to this ruling, these entities are prohibited from offering or promoting cryptocurrency services within the country.
