The Securities and Exchange Commission will hold a roundtable meeting on May 12th to discuss the growing role of tokenization in financial markets.

The event, entitled “Tokenization – Mobile Asset On Chain: Tradfi and Defi Meet,” will be held and will be live-cast at the agency’s Washington DC headquarters from 1pm to 5:30pm, according to a release from the SEC.

The Roundtable, led by Commissioner Hester Perth, features panelists such as BlackRock, Fidelity, Nasdaq and Robinhood.

Topics include the evolution of capital markets with tokenized assets and regulatory considerations regarding future use.

“Tokenization is a technology development that can significantly change many aspects of the financial market,” Perth said in the announcement.

Blockchain meets finance

The agenda includes two sessions: Capital Market 2.0, moderated by Jeff Din Woody of Cravas, and Tokenization Future, led by Tiffany Smith of Wilmer Hale.

Legal scholars, crypto company executives, and asset managers discuss how blockchain integrates with traditional finance under the current SEC framework.

The SEC has also announced changes to dates for upcoming roundtables on decentralized finance. The discussion on “Defi and the American Spirit,” originally set for June 6th, will be held on June 9th. Previous registrations are still valid.

The Round Table comes amid an increase in engagement between regulators and the crypto industry.

At another meeting, tokenization platform Ondo Finance presented its proposal to the SEC’s Crypto Asset Working Group, outlining a regulatory framework that tokenized US securities and calling for a relief mechanism to support innovation.
