Jacob Smith, 20, remains in the hospital after the incident at a McDonald’s in Yuba City on May 30th. His mother, Amber Smith, told NBC affiliate KCRA in Sacramento that she was getting ready to go home when she was attacked.

“He was getting ready to count money in his office when he saw something out of the corner of his eye and turned around and oil just fell on him,” she said.

According to KCRA, Yuba City Police identified the suspect as Jalani Brut. Blewett, 23, allegedly fled the McDonald’s after the incident, but was arrested by Sutter County deputies on May 31 after being reported missing.

Jacob Smith, who police say was doused with hot liquid by a co-worker at a McDonald's in Yuba City, Calif., is recovering in the ICU burn unit at the University of California, Davis.

He is charged with felony assault causing great bodily injury, felony mayhem and felony assault with a deadly weapon, according to online court records. He maintains his innocence.

It is not clear what led to the attack.

Mr. Blewett’s public defender did not respond to a request for comment.

Yuba City McDonald’s owner and operator John Cook said Mr. Blewett is no longer employed by the organization.

“This serious incident at our restaurant…is extremely concerning, and we are committed to supporting our employee Jacob as he recovers,” Cook said in an emailed statement. “The safety and well-being of our employees, customers and communities remains our top priority.”

Smith’s mother told KCRA that Smith had injuries to one side of his face, neck, right arm and entire back. She said he was experiencing “excruciating” pain and doctors were trying to reduce the size of his burns “to minimize the amount of skin grafting required.”
