Twelve individuals, including several minors, sustained injuries in a shooting incident that occurred near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium during homecoming festivities associated with a scheduled football game on Saturday.
The Tallahassee Police Department reported that out of the twelve victims, eleven were directly shot. Among these, three individuals suffered serious injuries, including one minor currently in critical condition, while the remaining victims are reported to be in stable condition.
Notably, six of the injured individuals are under the age of 18, with the youngest being just 11 years old. Police Chief Lawrence Revell disclosed these details during a press briefing early Sunday morning.
Chief Revell noted that initial investigations indicated the shooting arose from a conflict involving “two or three individuals,” characterizing the event as “an isolated incident.” To date, law enforcement has not made any arrests nor identified individuals in custody, although they have reason to believe a single shooter was responsible.
“Our priority is to determine what happened and why it happened, and to bring the people that are responsible for this to justice,” Chief Revell stated, urging anyone who witnessed the event to come forward with information.
The violent episode unfolded around 8 p.m. at an intersection near Bragg Memorial Stadium, coinciding with the game where Florida A&M’s Rattlers were hosting the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions, part of the university’s annual homecoming celebrations.
In response to the shooting, Florida A&M University released a statement on the social media platform X, advising the campus community to avoid the area while assuring them that the campus itself remained safe. The university expressed its support for the victims and those affected by the unfortunate incident, particularly highlighting the concern directed toward “everyone affected by tonight’s incident on Perry Street.”
Florida State University, located approximately a mile from Florida A&M, issued an emergency alert regarding the situation, emphasizing that no members of its community appeared to be involved. The alert included precautionary measures advising students, faculty, and staff in the Tallahassee vicinity to remain indoors and to stay vigilant.
Chief Revell extended condolences to the victims and their families, commending the officers who responded bravely to the unfolding chaos. He remarked on the courage displayed by officers as they navigated through the crowd to assist victims, some of whom they carried in their arms to ensure they received medical attention.
The investigation into this shooting incident is ongoing, with authorities continuing to seek witnesses to aid in their inquiries.
