Obama describes Trump as an agent of ‘chaos and cruelty’ in midterm elections pitch

CLEVELAND — At his first campaign rally in Cleveland for the upcoming midterm elections, former President Barack Obama criticized President Donald Trump, referring to him as a source of “chaos and cruelty” and a figure known for unfulfilled promises. Speaking to a packed audience at the Public Auditorium, Obama made several pointed remarks targeting Trump’s leadership style and his focus on personal aesthetics over substantive policy matters.

“Does anybody really think this guy in the White House right now is spending all that time thinking about these issues?” Obama asked, while highlighting Trump’s attention to home renovations, humorously suggesting that he should be featured on home improvement shows like HGTV. He further commented, “He’s got the White House looking like Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory,” drawing laughter from the audience.

This rally was particularly significant for local Democrats, as Obama aimed to support gubernatorial nominee Amy Acton and former Senator Sherrod Brown in their respective campaigns. With Ohio becoming increasingly Republican in recent years, both races are considered competitive, making the support of high-profile figures like Obama crucial for the Democratic party.

Rep. Shontel Brown echoed the importance of Ohio in the midterm elections, emphasizing that “this midterm election victory runs through Ohio.” Meanwhile, Trump has actively campaigned in the state, focusing on his endorsement of Republican candidate Sen. Jon Husted.

The gubernatorial race took a contentious turn recently when Vivek Ramaswamy, the Republican candidate, aired a controversial ad featuring Acton’s estranged mother. This ad was condemned broadly across the political spectrum for tapping into personal family traumas related to alleged abuse, issues that Acton herself has publicly discussed. At the rally, Obama condemned Ramaswamy’s tactics, stating, “We all know that guy — who is, like, thirsty…just wants to get attention no matter what.”

Acton responded to the attacks during her speech, thanking her supporters for their encouragement and declaring, “My opponent has chosen to exploit, intentionally, my childhood,” asserting that the strategy would ultimately fail.

In a lighter moment, Obama playfully characterized Senator Brown as frugal, noting that he still wears the same suit from when they first met. “You know he got a haircut for this rally, but you all know he’s too cheap to get a haircut more than once every couple of months,” Obama quipped. He praised Brown’s commitment to working-class issues, highlighting his consistent dedication to constituents even in challenging times.

Brown, who campaigned heavily against what he calls a corrupt status quo in Washington, stated, “Politicians who are supposed to be working for you are cashing in,” while the crowd responded with chants reminiscent of past political rallies, echoing sentiments from previous election cycles.

Reactions from Republican opponents included statements aiming to undermine the significance of Obama’s visit, with Ramaswamy’s spokesperson arguing that Ohioans cannot afford a governor who aligns with what they characterize as a “liberal agenda.” Husted’s campaign echoed similar sentiments, claiming that the Brown-Obama association should concern Ohioans.

Through much of his address, Obama stayed focused on Trump’s record, suggesting that voters should reassess Republican candidates in light of the promises that have yet to be fulfilled. Criticizing Trump’s policies, he pointed to detrimental tariffs and the war with Iran, asserting that the current administration’s decisions have contributed to rising costs for American families.

This campaign rally represents only one part of Obama’s extensive efforts this election season, as he plans to travel to other battleground states like Michigan and Georgia to support Democratic candidates. His work includes fundraising efforts amounting to over $15 million and participation in numerous media campaigns aimed at energizing Democratic voters.

In conclusion, Obama framed this election as an opportunity for voters to make a critical “course correction,” indicating profound political stakes as the nation approaches the midterm elections. “After two years of chaos and cruelty and corruption and incompetence,” he stated, “you get the chance to say, ‘Enough’s enough. We are going to change right here in Ohio.’”
