When the nominees for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards are announced early Monday morning, The Wizard of Oz could reign supreme.
“Wicked” appears poised to sweep a number of nominations, including Best Musical and Best Comedy. Acclaimed recent releases such as ‘Anora’, ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘A Real Pain’ will also be included in this category. (“Wicked” was distributed by Universal Pictures, a division of NBC Universal, the parent company of NBC News.)
In the race for best drama film, the frontrunners include the Vatican-set thriller “Conclave,” architectural postwar epic “The Brutalist,” and sci-fi spectacle “Dune Part 2.” (“Conclave” was distributed by Focus features, another division of NBCUniversal.)
Globe voters, unlike Oscar voters, also respect television achievements. The race for best comedy and drama series is expected to feature popular shows like ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” Max’s “Hacks” and FX’s “Shogun.” (The latter two shows won top honors at the Primetime Emmy Awards in September.)
The 27 nominations are scheduled to be announced by actors Mindy Kaling and Morris Chesnutt at approximately 8:15 a.m. ET. The ceremony will be broadcast live on January 5th on CBS and the streaming service Paramount+, and will be hosted by stand-up comedian Nikki Glazer.
In addition to the usual parade of trophies and speeches, this year’s Globes will honor small-screen star Ted Danson with the Carol Burnett Award. This award recognizes people who have made “an outstanding contribution to television both on and off-screen.”
Danson is a three-time Globe Award winner and is best known for her roles on NBC’s “Cheers,” CBS’s “Becker” and HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm.” He currently stars in Netflix’s “A Man on the Inside,” which could earn him a Globe nomination for best series.
