What do you know and why is it important?

President Donald Trump said he would send a shockwave through the global market on Monday night, firing Federal Reserve Board member Lisa Cook.

Trump’s decision not only wary of investors and economists, but also brought attention to the complicated internal fabrication of the US Central Bank. It also shows the latest escalation of Trump’s months of pressure campaign against the historically politically independent Fed to lower interest rates.

Here are some important facts to know:

Why do we follow the Federal Reserve?

The Federal Reserve controls US monetary policy. That dual mission, set forth in the 1977 Congressional Act, amending the Federal Reserve Act, is to maximize full employment and ensure stable prices. As the US is home to the world’s largest economy, the 111-year-old central bank also helps set the economic tone for all other development and emerging markets. The Fed will also attempt to oversee and regulate banks and their financial activities through a series of tests, stress testing and corrective actions, identifying and mitigating systemic risks.

A group of 12 people within the Fed, known as the Federal Government’s Open Markets Committee (FOMC), has set a major overnight borrowing rate, currently set at 4.25% to 4.50%. The Fed fund ratio is the target interest rate that banks charge each other on overnight loans to meet their reserve requirements, which helps them set the costs of mortgages, car loans and credit card liabilities. FOMC holds regular scheduled meetings at least eight times a year.

Who is Lisa Cook?

According to her bank biographies, Cook, the first African-American woman to sit on the Fed, has been governor since 2022. The following year, her 15-year term is expected to expire in 2038.

Before joining the Fed, Cook was a professor of economics and international relations at Michigan State University. The PhD in Economics from the University of California, Berkeley, was previously a national fellow at Harvard University Kennedy School of Government and Stanford University, and a researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research, Director of the American Economic Association’s Summer Training Program.

From 2011 to 2012, Dr. Cook served as a senior economist on the Council of Economic Advisors under President Barack Obama.

What is the Fed Governor?

The Federal Committee consists of seven members appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The governor is considered the core of the agency and is a permanent member of the closely watched FOMC. The other five voting members of the FOMC are comprised of a rotating cast of the Federal Reserve Bank Chairman of the New York, a permanent representative, and four Reserve Bank presidents.

Why is Trump firing her? Did she respond?

In a social media post, Trump cited allegations that Cook made a false statement about his mortgage application. Cook responds by saying he has no authority to fire her and that she will sue him.

The Fed said in an official statement Tuesday afternoon it complies with a court ruling governing the legality of Cook’s firing. The president can fire a Fed governor “for a cause,” but the law doesn’t exactly define what that means. The case is expected to be caught up in the Supreme Court.

Are there any secondary motivations?

Trump cited the issue of mortgages, but the move towards Fire Cook comes from the Fed seeking its critical borrowing speed. Earlier this summer, Trump came to mind the idea of firing Chairman Jerome Powell, who has repeatedly accused him of keeping the rates since late last year.

Trump may get his wish. According to the CMEFedWatch tool, the Fed’s Funds Futures is priced at a potential of over 89% that central banks will cut fees at their next policy collection in September. However, its market valuation is based on July labor reports and downward revisions in May and June, rather than political pressure from the White House.

What was the market’s response?

Following the trend since Trump took office in January, investors have largely shaken up immediate concerns that politics will infiltrate monetary policy. Shares rose on Tuesday.

However, other areas have shown signs of concern. an Indexes that track US dollars A basket of foreign currency slipped on Tuesday as investors turned to international alternatives. gold – Traditionally, it was considered a safe reservoir of value during rising inflation – rose in response to White House movements.

What does conflict mean for Main Street?

Everyday Americans don’t feel an immediate impact from Trump’s decision to cooks. However, it could have long-term impacts on economic policy.

If Trump could get rid of the cooks, he would create an opening to appoint FOMC governors who could vote in favor of lower interest rates.
