Four students, including three gunshot wounds, were injured after being shot at Wilmer Hutchins High School in Dallas on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
Dallas Fire and Rescue Service officials confirmed the injury and said the patient was between 15 and 18 years old.
Students were seen evacuating the main school building after the shooting was reported to authorities around 1pm.
“I turned around and all I heard was seven gunshots. I grabbed the teacher and ran to my room,” said student Patrick Campos. “We ran, everyone was running.”
During a brief press conference Tuesday afternoon, Dallas ISD police and district officials said the gunman was identified but was common. Hours later, the suspect was arrested and taken into custody at the Dallas County Jail.
The school is the same as the school where students were injured in a classroom shooting last year.
“As we all know today, something unthinkable happened,” said Dallas Independent School District Principal Stephanie Elizalde. “And frankly, this is becoming so familiar that it should be unfamiliar.”
The district said the guns did not enter the school building during the main ingestion period when students pass through the metal detector.
District officials would not have said how the guns entered the building or what happened at the moment before the shot was fired.
“We have the suspect’s identity, but as mentioned earlier, this is still a very fresh and fluid investigation, so there is no other information about what led to the shooting.”
District leaders said classes will be cancelled at school throughout the rest of the week and will be available to counselors to anyone struggling after the shooting.
