SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY — The Sovereignty defeated journalism in a Kentucky Derby rematch on Saturday, winning the 157th Belmont Stakes, with the second hosting in Saratoga.
Sovereignty and jockey junior Alvarado crossed the eighth field with a raindrop and fast Saratoga track all morning after hay and early afternoon.
The 5-2 favourite won by 0.69 seconds in 2 minutes, defeating the winner journalism of the Preakness Stakes by three lengths.
Journalism was second and Baeza was third. It’s the same as the Kentucky Derby 1-2-3.
Journalism entered the gates of Belmont as a 2-1 favorite, while Baeza is his third favorite, 7-2.
Sovereignty led the first war of the Triple Crown by winning the Derby in early May. Bill Mott trained Colt concluded his journalism with that race.
After the Derby victory, the 3-year-old, owned by Godolphin, opted out of Preakness’s stakes and focused on Belmont, losing a shot of history to win the Triple Crown. The Triple Crown has not won since Bob Bufferate’s Justify won in 2018 to secure his third gem by winning the 105th Belmont Stakes.
Journalism was the only horse to run on all three legs and won Preakness.
