As we approach the end of the first quarter of 2025, we haven’t exactly panned out this year, as many people were thinking about it in the digital assets field. However, if Crypto is consistently one thing, it is unpredictable.
The market is declining, primarily because global economics is outside its control, but industry optimism remains high, and there are many reasons to support this sentiment. With the potential for a pro-crypto regulatory framework in the US and the continued expansion of defi to strategic cryptocurrency reserves and more AI, the industry is constantly mature and evolved.
The natural volatility of the industry will remain in the near future, but its maturity will be driven by innovation and a stronger, more stable infrastructure. The foundation allows the industry to focus on addressing challenges and increasing recruitment.
Despite the infamous unpredictability of the industry, some overlooked trends can have a significant impact on the broader ecosystem.
Emerging regulatory frameworks
Are regulators struggling to apply clear rules to Defi, as the government can contact you in the event of a violation or concern if the network or protocol is not controlled by a single entity? Defi is currently exempt from direct surveillance, but the US, EU and the UK are looking for ways to effectively legislate this rapidly evolving sector.
In the US, the House last week voted to repeal IRS rules requiring the Defi protocol to report revenue from crypto sales. This step is likely to indicate that the Trump administration will lean towards a regulation overview that seeks to protect investors without disrupting the decentralized and innovative nature of the definition.
Comprehensive regulations are unlikely to be enacted by the end of the year, but it is likely that they will be expected to better understand the policies and approaches that policymakers may take. Defi may continue to adopt the customer and money anti laundry process, with a focus on solutions like zero knowledge proof. This is the ideal type of approach, as it balances privacy with the need to maintain KYC and AML compliance.
The impact of another type of Tradfi
Traditional finance and cryptography are increasingly cross-path as the former recognizes the latter as a legitimate asset class. The steady increase in interest in Tradfi’s digital assets has partly contributed to a growing awareness of the need for better risk reduction.
Portfolio diversification is a central pillar of mitigating financial risk, and indexes have historically proven to be a more effective investment tool than actively managed funds. As more retail investors enter the space, crypto indexes like J’Jo35, which are exposed to the top 35 tokens by market capitalization, could become a popular choice due to their stable long-term growth track record with minimal effort.
Last year saw the introduction of Spot ETFs in Crypto, but 2025 could be the year when index investments will ultimately play a more prominent role in the digital asset ecosystem.
AI and Crypto Wallets
The growing role of AI within Crypto is well documented, from AI trading algorithms and compliance to smart contract optimization. The crypto industry is one of the most aggressive industries in the approach to implementing agent AI, but the next big AI use case for cryptography is the use of voice assistants in crypto wallets.
Tether made a splash in February and soon announced it would launch a series of AI apps, including the “AI Bitcoin Wallet Assistant.” This wallet assistant helps users manage transactions, track price changes, and keep their funds safe via all voice commands. Tether is also implementing a developer-friendly SDK to build customized AI agents for voice-controlled payment solutions.
Tomi, a Web3 infrastructure project to build a privacy-oriented, distributed internet, recently launched its Web3 wallet’s first AI-powered voice assistant. Added to Tomi Wallet, this addition provides hands-free engagement with digital assets, enabling an intuitive and smooth user experience. As more AI Voice command capabilities reach other crypto wallets, such as the Simplifai demo, this development is part of a wider trend for integrating AI to improve the user experience.
