Madonna has her decades-long feud with Elton John behind her.
On Monday, the pop icon shared behind the scenes photos of her and John after appearing as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live, writing, “We’ve finally filled up hatchet!”
Over the years, the “Rocketman” singer has publicly unraveled Madonna. But following their latest reunion, she said everything is with them now.
In her Instagram post, Madonna explained that she decided to go see John perform over the weekend and “straight him.”
She began her post, remembering how she sneaked out of her house while in high school to see John at a concert in Detroit.
“It was an unforgettable performance that helped me understand the transformative power of music,” she wrote.
“Watching him perform when I was in high school changed the course of my life. I always felt like an outsider was growing, so it helped me see him stand out,” she said. She said.
But she said, “It hurt me to know that for decades people I admired publicly as an artist, and I didn’t understand that.
“When I met him, the first thing I met through his mouth was, ‘Forgive me’ and the wall between us fell,” she wrote. “Forgiveness is a powerful tool. Within minutes, we were holding it.”
Madonna reveals that John told her that he had written a song for her, and he wanted to cooperate.
“It all seemed like it had gone round!!” she wrote, adding lyrics from one of his hits.
The “Tiny Dancer” crooner also shared a post about Madonna’s Instagram story, calling the reconciliation a “healing moment.”

John has not stifled his thoughts about the “Vogue” singer for over 20 years.
When the British artist won the award at the Q Award in 2004, he denounced Madonna for lip-singing.
“Madonna, Best Live Act? F—Off,” John said. “When was Lip Syncing live? I’m sorry about that, but I think anyone who lip syncs in public when you pay should get 75 Quid to see them.”
He revealed his comments and told Entertainment Weekly a few weeks later that he would apologize to her, not wanting to “escalate” the situation.
“I love Madonna so I don’t want to escalate,” the singer-songwriter told the magazine. “She’s been to my house for dinner. That was something she was told in the heat of the moment and probably shouldn’t have been said.”
“Would you apologise if you see her?” he said. “Yeah, I don’t want to hurt the artist’s feelings. That was my fault. I incited everything. But that applies to all those bloody teenage singers.”
2004: Madonna’s rep denies lip-singling
Following John’s initial comments at the awards, Madonna spokesperson Liz Rosenberg denied the allegation.
“Madonna isn’t lip syncing and doesn’t spend time destroying other artists,” Rosenberg said in October 2004, according to the Associated Press. “She sang all the notes from the re-invasion tour live, but she is not ashamed that she was paid well for her hard work.”
January 2012: Elton John’s husband also criticizes Madonna
Elton John’s husband David Furnish expressed his dissatisfaction with Madonna’s winning the best song at the 2012 Golden Globes, and announced the track “Masterpiece” from John’s “Hello Hello” to “Gnomeo & Juliet.”
“Madonna. Best Song???? F —Off!!!” he wrote in a deleted post on Facebook.
A few days later, he apologised, saying that his love for John’s song had taken over his feelings.
According to e, “Amazing! What a teapot feeling. News. “My passion for our film “Gnomeo & Juliet” and my belief in Elton’s song really moved my emotional juices. But I have to say for the record that Madonna is a great artist and that Elton and I believe she hopes the best in next week’s film premiere “We.”
January 2012: Madonna admits that Elton John hates her
According to Us Weekly, Madonna told reporters after the 2012 Golden Globes that she knew John had a tendency to “be angry” towards her.
“I hope he will talk to me for the next few years,” she said after winning. “I don’t know because he’s known to be angry with me. He’s great and I adore him, so he wins another award. He doesn’t feel bad!”
August 2012: Elton John says Madonna’s “career is over”
In August 2012, John called Madonna, who was dressed like a “fairground stripper” in an interview with Australia’s Channel 7 “Sunday Night,” a “nightmare.”
In the same interview, he said, “Her career is over.”
Meanwhile, a Madonna spokesperson said he didn’t spend time “destroying other artists” at the time.
August 2013: Elton John says their feud is “end, finished”
The following year, John told “Extra” that he and Madonna had a feud behind them. When asked if he would make up for it with Madonna, he replied, “We have.”
John said they made up while they were in France when they happened to be in the same restaurant.
“She came in and I sent me a note, she was so elegant,” he shared. “Because what I said should never have appeared in public. She was so elegant. She accepted my apology. We bought her dinner.
Furnish, who was also interviewed with her husband, added, “We don’t believe in putting negative thoughts into the world. When everything came out, we were embarrassed.”
At the time, John said Madonna had “every right” to not want to talk to him again.
From Madonna’s latest Instagram post, it appears she’s taken another decade to fully accept his apology.
2025: Madonna says she and Elton John “built hatchet”
In her Instagram post on Monday, Madonna shared why she decided to “facing” John behind the scenes after his “Saturday Night Live” performance.
