Evans, Ga. — Two Georgia deputies were shot dead during a traffic stop Saturday evening, one of them dead, law enforcement officials said.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the deputy’s death around 6:30pm and said the other deputies were taken to hospital, WRDW-TV reported.
The suspect was identified as James Blake Montgomery. James Blake Montgomery was believed to have been in a camper near Milemarker 194 on Bella Road near Augusta, Columbia County Councilman.
The helicopters and drones were in the air as part of their efforts to capture Montgomery, the agent said.
Communications over police radio told officers to take photos of the suspect “in the trailer.” The focus was on the Arrowood Mobile Home community.
Gov. Brian Kemp has issued a statement on X regarding filming.
“Marty, the girl and I pray for the Columbia County Sheriff’s loved ones and colleagues who have fallen into duties, and his fellow law enforcement officers were injured tonight,” Kemp said. “We also have a painful reminder of why badges have more than gaining our lasting respect and gratitude as they remain in our hearts and prayers.”
