The Ethereum Foundation has shifted its focus from performance to security, setting a goal of 128-bit provable security for L1 zkEVM by the end of 2026. We require participating zkEVM teams to adopt standardized security measurement tools and develop a three-step roadmap to achieve our goals.
The first phase focuses on an integrated security assessment in early 2026. The second phase targets at least 100 bits of provable security by mid-2026, with defined proof size limits. The final stage will require full 128-bit provable security with smaller proofs and formal soundness arguments by the end of 2026.
As recent advances in cryptography have made these goals achievable, the authors emphasize that stabilization of the zkEVM architecture is essential to enable formal verification and long-term security, marking a transition from performance experimentation to fundamental robustness.
