The missing Eagle, born to the popular Southern California Eagle couple, passed away in a recent winter storm. The nonprofit that owns and operates Eagles’ nesting cameras said Saturday.
Jackie and Shadow’s missing Eaglet “didn’t get through a serious winter storm,” said Jenny Voisard, media and website manager for Big Bear Valley Friends, in a statement.
More than two feet of snow fell into the area during the storm, Boysard said.
According to Big Bear Lake, Jackie and Shadow, whose egg laying journey is live streamed every year, laid three eggs at the end of January. All three were hatched in the first week of March.
In a video of the nest on Thursday afternoon, three eagles, fed by their parents, showed everything. However, on Friday and Saturday, only two birds appeared in the livestream nest.
Voisard said the third eagle died at 6pm on Thursday, saying, “All three were fed together, then fed a while, then died a while after some time.”
Voisard noted that the nest scenery is still partially blocked by the melting of snow, and said he doesn’t know what happened or why the baby bird died. She also said it was unclear which tic was dead as they were all in close sizes.
Jackie and Shadow continued to feed their youth on Saturday, Boysard said.
“Days like these test us as humans because we fear uncertainty and the unknown,” Boysard said. “Our hope is that Jackie and Shadow will work to persevere and move forward, bringing some comfort and peace. We are reminding us once again that nature is wild and not scripted.”
