NEW YORK – “Captain America: Brave New World” surged at the weekend’s opening, but crashed on the second go-around with the audience.
According to Studio estimates, “Brave New World” is the latest indication that the Marvel machine is not the old one, and remained number one in ticket sales at the box office of $28.2 million. However, it meant a sharp decline of 68% after debuting at $100 million in four days and $88 million in three days.
The Blockbusters often get to see key slides on their second weekend, but their previous MCU titles fell by just two faster. Marvel in 2023 saw a 78% decrease, while Ant-Man and the Hawk: Quantumania in 2023 fell by 70%. .
Anthony Mackey-led “Captain America” installments have been criticised by critics, and audiences also graded it in stages with a “B-” cinemascore. “Brave New World,” which fans hoped to straighten the Marvel ship, is largely another example of the once inexplicable brand that struggled to regain the invincible aura of its previous “Avengers: Endgame” aura. I’ve met you.
Still, Brave New World quickly sold $289.4 million worldwide, with international sales reaching almost $150 million. And there will be little competition throughout much of March as there is little big budget offer to arrive at the theatres in the coming weeks.
The biggest new release of the weekend was “The Monkey” by Oz Perkins, a follow-up to the director’s 2024 horror hit “Longlegs.” An adaptation of Stephen King’s short story, “The Monkey” opened for $14.2 million for Neon, the second-best debut for indie distributors. Best? “Longlegs” was released for $22.4 million.
Neon had a lot to celebrate on the weekends. “Anola” by Sean Baker, a top award nominee, continues to gain momentum at the Academy Awards next Sunday. Your best favorite addition win at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday.
Partnering with the release of “The Monkey,” Perkins, Neon and Blumhouse have discovered a productive, low-budget collaboration. Even if the “monkey” hasn’t reached the height of “long legs” ($126.9 million worldwide), Perkins and Neon will return to “keeper” this October.
Starring Tatiana Maslany and Theo James, “The Monkey” revolves around an old monkey toy in the attic. The reviews were good (77% fresh in rotten tomatoes), but viewers weren’t so impressed, giving them the C+ Cinemascore. However, horror movies are usually low grade.
Just like “Long Legs,” Neon leaned against the inexplicable promotion of “The Monkey,” with some creepy marketing. The funeral premiere took place at Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles, and fans screened at Hollywood Cemetery. The film, produced by James Wang, cost $10 million.
Lionsgate’s “The Unbreakable Boy” opened in 1,687 theaters for just $2.5 million. The Christian-themed film directed by John Gunn, starring Zachary Levi and Meghan Fahe, is about parents who learn that their son has autism and fragile bone disease.
Marmalade Mud Bear’s third installment, “Peru Paddington,” fell to third place in the second weekend. It won $6.5 million in 3,890 locations, bringing it to a two-week total of $25.2 million. “Peru Paddington” is the most popular overseas, and has so far raised $125 million.
The animated Chinese juggernaut “Ne Zha 2” won $3.1 million from 800 theatres over the second weekend. In China, the sequel sold $1.7 billion this month, setting numerous box office records. These totals past Ne Zha 2 “Inside Out 2” ($1.666 billion), making it the best gloss animated film ever.
