Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Marquez was shot dead on camera during a live stream of Tiktoc.
Marquez, 23, sat inside a beauty salon in Zapopan when footage from the livestream got caught up in a shocking incident. The influencer, wearing the same bodysuit she wore in her latest Instagram photo, was seen holding a stuffed pig in her lap before her death.
She heard in Spanish saying, “They’re coming,” but before that, the off-screen voice was “Hey, veil?” Then Marquez replied “Yes,” muted the sound of the stream. A few seconds later, she appeared to have been shot with a firearm.
Her Instagram ballooned from under 100,000 to under 260,000 in the news as a mix of support and shock poured into comments in a recent post.
City police officers and paramedics confirmed Marquez’s death when they arrived at the scene, according to the Jalisco State Attorney General’s Office. The office said Tuesday that the murder is being investigated for a potential murder. This is defined by the United Nations as “intentional murder with gender-related motives.”
A study by data collection platform Statista ranked Mexico as the second highest country in Latin America in 2023. The country recorded nearly 800 cases in 2024, a decline from the past. According to Statista, victims tended to have existing family or collaborative relationships with the invaders.
The initial investigation into Marquez’s murder revealed that the man entered the facility and clearly fired a weapon at her. Investigators continue to gather evidence. Marquez’s body is set to be transferred to the Jalisco Institute of Forensic Sciences facility, where it awaits official identification and autopsy, according to a statement Tuesday.
