London – Prince Harry says all his memoirs are “not about revenge,” defending his decision to make them public in a royal conflict, working to correct relations between his family and the British public.
Harry also expressed his desire to see much of his father, Charles III, after his first meeting in almost two years. The short tea revealed new details about the royal family’s fierce internal feud, including allegations that Harry’s 2023 memoir “Spare” was a step towards reconciliation, with his brother Prince William physically attacking him.
“I don’t think we’ve aired dirty laundry publicly,” Harry told The Guardian in an interview released Sunday.
“It was a difficult message, but I did it the best possible way. My conscience is clear,” Harry said. We spoke on a trip to Ukraine a few days later in the UK.
Harry’s visit to the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, was with his Invictus Games Foundation team, following an invitation from the Ukrainian government.
“It’s not about revenge, it’s about accountability,” Harry added his book. “We cannot reconcile before we have the truth.”
Harry, who turned 41 on Monday, described the book as “a series of revisions to the story already there.”
His relationship with his family has been strained for a long time, but he has now become publicly fractured after the Duke of Sussex and his wife, Meghan Markle, left the frontline royal duties in 2020 and moved to California, where he launched a media project and charity.
Last week, Harry met Charles and met a private tee at the King’s residence. It was the first time the pair had seen each other in 19 months. Although details of the meeting remained quiet, Harry suggested his hopes and needs to meet his father more frequently.
Next year he said, “The focus really needs to be on my dad.”
Charles was diagnosed with cancer in February 2024, but many of the details have been kept private.
Harry added that his trip to the UK has brought him closer to the idea of ​​spending more time there despite the unresolved disputes over his security arrangements.
“This week definitely brought it closer,” he said.
According to a recent poll, only 33% of Britons have positive opinions about Harry, so he has only 21% of his wife and 9% of Prince Andrew, one of the most popular and well-known royals.
After resigning from royal duties, Harry’s British protections were downgraded from full-time cover to case-by-case. Earlier this year, he lost his appeal in court to overturn the decision.
In May, he told the BBC that his father would not tell him “for this security,” but he wanted to reconcile with the royal family and told him “it’s pointless to fight people.”
His relationship with his brother, the heir to the throne, does not appear to have improved. The pair have not met since February 2024.
