President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he agreed to an extension of the 50% tariff deadline in the European Union until July 9th.
“I received a call today from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, demanding an extension on the June 1 deadline for 50% tariffs on trade and the European Union,” Trump wrote of the True Society.
“July 9, 2025 – I agreed to the extension. It was my privilege to do so,” he added.
Trump’s post comes after von der Leyen said he had a “good call” with Trump but needed to “reach a fair deal” until July 9th.
“The EU and the US share the most consequential and close trade ties in the world,” she writes in X.
“Europe is ready to move forward with consultations quickly and decisively,” she continued.
Trump imposed a 20% tariff on the EU as part of his radical “mutual tariffs” before cutting to 10% in 90 days.
However, Trump last week suggested a “straight 50% tariff” on the EU from June 1, saying that the 27-nation bloc is “very difficult to deal with.”
“Our discussion with them is not going anywhere!” Trump wrote on Friday about the true society.
He later said he had no plans to sign a contract with the EU by June 1.
“I just said, it’s time to play games in the way you play games,” he said at an executive order signing event at the White House.
