Polygon co-founder Mihailo Bjelic has announced his decision to step down from the Polygon Foundation’s board of directors.

The co-founder of Polygon (Pol) revealed the movement via a post on Friday, May 23, 2025, noting that his daily involvement in Polygon Labs will also “decay.”

“Polygon was born in 2019. Since then, we have come a long way,” writes Bjelic. “From a key breakthrough in zero-knowledge technology to adopting some of the world’s biggest brands, we have made meaningful progress towards that epic vision, and we are proud of this and grateful to work with so many talented people.”

Bjelic says in 2013 he first entered the crypto space.

He co-founded Polygon, Ethereum (ETH) layer 2 scaling solution, alongside Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal and Anurag Arjun. The project was one of the most searched proof blockchains in the US in 2023 and was rebranded from the first name Matic Network.

Explaining his decision further, Bjelic said:

“It’s natural that as projects evolve and mature, visions evolve and sometimes branch out. With this in mind, I can no longer contribute to the polygons at the very best of my abilities.”

He is no longer actively involved, but he said he is confident that the polygon will continue to succeed. Bjelic will provide his support “from the bystander.”

Bjelic’s exit from the Polygon Foundation Board is watching co-founders Jaynti Kanani and Anurag Arjun resign from their active roles in the blockchain project. Kanani left Polygon in October 2023. On average, Arjun left in March 2023 and focused on using modular blockchain projects.

Nailwal said via X that he cannot be described in words what Bjelic means personally and for polygons.

“More than your co-founder, you’re a brother. Since the early days – a whiteboard filled with ideas, endless white papers, governance frameworks, and strategy calls is deep in the evening.
