The Federal Aviation Administration issued a nationwide ground stop order on Christmas Eve morning, citing “technical issues” affecting all American Airlines flights.
The FAA said the ground stop was issued at the request of airlines on one of the busiest travel days of the year.
“Our team is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience caused to our customers,” the airline said.
American Airlines announced just before 8 a.m. ET that the ground stop was lifted and planes began boarding.
Social media users who were delayed at the gate had reported issues with scanning their boarding passes.
X users asked American Airlines when their issue would be resolved. American Airlines responded: “Our teams are currently working to make this happen. No estimated timeframe has been provided, but we are working to fix it in the shortest possible time.”
