Officials said 11 Indians were among the 12 people found dead at a ski resort in Georgia’s Caucasus Mountains, with possible carbon monoxide poisoning.
Georgia’s Interior Ministry said all of the victims were employees of a restaurant in Gudauri, a popular ski resort near the Russian border. The 12th person is a Georgian citizen.
The two were found in a rest area on the second floor of the restaurant, and it is believed that a generator installed in the bedroom came on after the power went out.
“Initial examinations detected no injuries or signs of violence on the body,” the ministry said.
Georgian police are investigating the death as manslaughter, the ministry said, adding that a forensic team is working to determine the exact cause of death.
In a post on X on Monday, the Indian embassy in Tbilisi said it was “working closely with local authorities to facilitate the prompt repatriation of the body to India.”
Generators emit lethal amounts of carbon monoxide and are recommended to be used almost exclusively outdoors.
In the United States, portable generators are among the most dangerous consumer products, killing an average of 70 people a year.
