Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has undergone emergency surgery to remove a hemorrhage on his brain.
The 79-year-old leftist leader underwent surgery after an MRI scan showed “intracranial hemorrhage,” according to an Associated Press translation of medical records published on his official X account on Tuesday.
The surgery was successful and Lula is “in good spirits” and is currently being monitored in the intensive care unit of Sirio Libanes Hospital in São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, according to a translation of medical records. He was transferred from the capital Brasilia and underwent an MRI scan on Monday.
Earlier this year, Lula fell at home and was left with a cut on the back of her head, just above her neck. Doctors believe the two incidents are related, according to a translation of the hospital’s medical report.
The accident forced Lula to cancel a planned trip to the 2024 BRICS summit in the southwestern Russian city of Kazan, according to a statement from his office at the time. .
