The city of Detroit is set to become the largest U.S. city to accept cryptocurrencies for tax payments and city fees, starting in mid-2025.

According to city officials, this payment method will be safely facilitated by PayPal, aligning with Detroit’s overarching mission to modernize public services, enhance citizen engagement, and stimulate economic development.

Mayor Mike Duggan voiced support for the initiative, highlighting Detroit’s aim to foster a tech-savvy atmosphere that benefits both residents and entrepreneurs.

“Detroit is focused on fostering a tech-friendly ecosystem for residents and entrepreneurs,” said Duggan. “We are thrilled to be among the leading U.S. cities exploring the use of blockchain and offering cryptocurrency as a payment method.”

City Treasurer Nikhil Patel pointed out that this new platform will increase accessibility for Detroit citizens, particularly those who are unbanked or prefer digital payment options.

“This upgrade will also simplify electronic payments for Detroiters.”

Alongside the introduction of cryptocurrency as a payment option, Detroit is encouraging blockchain innovators to submit projects aimed at enhancing public service transparency, security, and efficiency.

Submissions are due by December 15, 2024, and should be directed to Justin Onwenu, the Detroit Director of Entrepreneurship and Economic Opportunity.

Onwenu stated, “Blockchain technology could greatly enhance accessibility, efficiency, transparency, and security. We’re eager to hear from leading entrepreneurs in this field.”

This initiative positions Detroit alongside a growing list of cities that are beginning to accept cryptocurrency payments. Currently, municipalities like Williston, North Dakota, and Miami Lakes, Florida allow cryptocurrency transactions for specific city services.

However, Detroit will take the lead in terms of size and scope, making it the largest city in the U.S. to allow cryptocurrency payments.

Cities such as Miami and New York have shown enthusiasm for cryptocurrency, while states like Colorado, Utah, and Louisiana have already started offering cryptocurrency payment options for state taxes.
