Rookie quarterback Drake Maye was unable to play in the game against the New England Patriots and the New York Jets on Sunday due to a head injury.
Maye, who was chosen as the third overall pick in last spring’s NFL Draft and was playing in just his third game as a starter, suffered the injury while running down the field. He was struck in the back of the helmet by Jets defender Jamian Sherwood. Following the hit, Maye was quickly taken to the medical tent for evaluation and was deemed questionable to return by the Patriots.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo informed CBS during halftime that Maye would not be returning to the game. In his place, Jacoby Brissett took over for the remainder of Week 8. CBS subsequently reported that Maye had suffered a concussion.
This injury interrupted what had been a promising outing for Maye. In the first quarter, when his offensive protection faltered, he displayed his agility by running for a 17-yard touchdown. Shortly thereafter, Maye delivered a precise 40-yard pass while on the move, although it was unfortunately dropped. Overall, he completed 3 of 6 passes for a total of 23 yards and added 46 rushing yards on three attempts.
