Recent trends indicate a significant decline in monthly peer-to-peer (P2P) cryptocurrency trading in Canada, which has dropped from a high of approximately 650,000 transactions in spring 2024. This decrease is correlated with a reduction in the international student population, as reported by Chainalysis.

summary

The study highlights a population-level correlation rather than a direct cause-and-effect link between the number of international students and cryptocurrency trading activity. Data reveal that new student arrivals have plummeted by 71% from January to August 2026 compared to the same period in 2024. As local payment providers report diminished remittance expenses, challenges remain in local currency conversions. Notably, the Philippine bank BPI has piloted stablecoin payments to facilitate overseas income deposits into local bank accounts.

Trends in Peer-to-Peer Cryptocurrency Activity

Chainalysis’s analysis of the Canadian P2P cryptocurrency landscape reveals that the volume of domestic transactions has closely mirrored trends in study permit issuances since mid-2021. The peak trading volume was recorded in spring 2024, after which a notable decline occurred, with transactional activity expected to stabilize at lower levels.

The data reveals a forecast trajectory for study permit holders through 2025, while the trading patterns extend into 2026. Chainalysis emphasizes that this relationship reflects an association between the two factors rather than definitive causation, exploring broader migrant financial behaviors as potential contributors to this trend.

Significant Reductions in International Student Arrivals

According to statistics from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), only 65,240 new international students entered Canada from January to August 2026—a staggering decline of 71% from 2024 figures. The government’s metrics differentiate between new arrivals and those renewing permits, excluding extensions and asylum seekers, although newly issued permits can include both study and work options.

The existing number of study permit holders has also seen a sharp decrease, with figures falling to 602,115 by the end of August 2026 from 1,032,950 in June 2024. This represents a decrease of approximately 41.7%. Starting in 2024, the Canadian government implemented an annual cap on study permits, aiming for 155,000 new enrollments in 2026, amidst further reductions planned for subsequent years.

Exploring Cost-Efficiency in Stablecoin Transfers

A recent report scrutinizing remittance costs associated with stablecoins highlights significant variances based on the payment routes taken. A study released on October 16, 2026, by crypto.news found that the median fee for stablecoin transfers was around 1% for Q3 2026, starkly contrasting with the global average of 6.36% documented by the World Bank for Q3 2025.

This disparity illustrates the cost-effectiveness of stablecoin remittances, potentially costing $2 versus $12.72 for a $200 payment based on the respective fee structures. However, completion rates for payments differ significantly based on destination, with rates ranging from 73% for Costa Rica to 98.6% for Mexico, as noted in the study.

Challenges with Local Currency Payments

In an interview on August 24, Gravity Team CEO Mārtiņš Beņķītis discussed the complexities of converting stablecoin transactions to local currencies. He noted that while payment companies are utilizing stablecoins for fund transfers, local currency conversion remains a significant challenge due to varied banking hours, compliance standards, trading limitations, and liquidity availability in different markets.

Beņķītis emphasized that even after a stablecoin reaches its destination, converting it into local currency to complete transactions is still necessary, highlighting the operational hurdles in these transfers.

Pilot Program for Overseas Income Payments by BPI

In July 2026, Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) initiated a pilot program that leverages stablecoin technology to streamline payments for freelancers and virtual assistants receiving income from abroad. In collaboration with Meridian, BPI aims to convert stablecoin payments into Philippine pesos for seamless deposits into customer accounts.

BPI President José Teodoro Limcaoco stated that the initiative is designed to improve access to overseas earnings and reduce expenses while upholding security protocols. The program targets payroll and overseas income distributions, with plans to broaden the customer base by the upcoming ASEAN Summit in November, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards on consumer protection and transparency regarding stablecoin reserves.
