Senate Democrats Target Mississippi in High-Stakes Race

By Bridget Bowman

As Election Day approaches, Senate Democrats are intensifying their efforts to make inroads in traditionally Republican-dominated states, with Mississippi emerging as a significant battlefield. The Senate Majority PAC, a leading super PAC aligned with Democrats, has launched a $1.2 million advertising campaign aimed at bolstering the candidacy of Scott Colom, a prosecutor contesting the Senate seat currently held by Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith.

Colom’s campaign is highlighted by a 30-second commercial that positions him as a candidate committed to addressing corruption across party lines, while simultaneously criticizing Hyde-Smith as an ineffective incumbent. “Senate Majority PAC has been closely monitoring this race and sees that Colom is running a competitive campaign, making Hyde-Smith feel pressure,” stated Lauren French, a spokesperson for the super PAC, which is set to utilize various advertising platforms.

The strategic shift in targeting deep-red states reflects the changing political landscape, particularly in the context of President Donald Trump’s declining approval ratings. Democrats require a net gain of four Senate seats to regain control, thus necessitating victories in several states that Trump won in the 2024 election, including Mississippi. Historically, the state has leaned Republican heavily—Trump secured a 23-point victory there two years ago, and the last time a Democrat won a Senate seat in Mississippi was in 1982.

Beyond Mississippi, the Senate Majority PAC has also allocated resources for campaigns in states like Kansas, Alaska, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas, where Trump previously enjoyed significant victories. In conjunction with these efforts, the Senate Leadership Fund (SLF), the Republican counterpart, is also investing in several states, although they have opted not to support Hyde-Smith in Mississippi. SLF is particularly focused on bolstering GOP Senator Lindsey Graham in South Carolina and supporting Republican Pete Ricketts in Nebraska against an independent challenger.

Critical Secretary of State Elections in Battleground States

By Jane C. Timm

In a landscape of shifting election dynamics, voters in key swing states are set to determine who will oversee election processes in upcoming presidential elections. The states in focus—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, and Nevada—are all integral battlegrounds that have garnered increased attention due to historical controversies surrounding election integrity.

The importance of secretary of state positions has surged, particularly following unfounded election fraud claims from Trump and supporters. The 2022 elections saw political spending in these races explode, with Democrats investing over $71 million while Republicans contributed nearly $15 million, as indicated by AdImpact data. This year, however, overall campaign expenditure has decreased across the 26 secretary of state races, with Democrats spending $16.6 million and Republicans around $5 million.

This election cycle highlights a resurgence of interest in states pivotal to the 2028 presidential election map. In Arizona and Nevada, two incumbents from the Democratic Party are facing off against far-right challengers known for pushing election conspiracy theories. In Georgia and Michigan, open-seat races attract candidates who intend to present themselves as moderates, even as Democrats are framing them as Trump supporters who may undermine electoral confidence.

Trey Grayson, a former Republican Secretary of State from Kentucky, noted the difficulty faced by GOP candidates in balancing their appeals: “They must connect with Trump’s base without isolating independents. In battlegrounds, leaning into election denialism presents a challenge in securing broader appeal for the fall elections,” he said.

These races reflect broader concerns about the integrity and administration of elections in a politically charged atmosphere, highlighting their increasing stakes as the nation approaches another presidential election cycle.
