During a recent interview with CNBC, David Zervos, the newly appointed Chief Market Strategist for Jefferies LLC and counselor to the U.S. Treasury Secretary, offered a critical perspective on the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) analysis of U.S. fiscal policy. Zervos noted that the IMF should reflect on its own forecasting history before passing judgment on U.S. economic strategies.

“When we see pieces on the IMF, it’s good to remember how messy their forecasts have been in the past,” remarked Zervos, emphasizing the variability of the IMF’s predictions.

This comment follows a statement made by Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, during the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank held in Bangkok. Georgieva expressed concern that robust economic growth in the U.S. may not suffice to set the country’s soaring federal debt on a sustainable path, especially as total government debt has exceeded $40 trillion.

Zervos’s remarks were in response to comments by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who suggested in an August interview with CNBC that the United States has the potential to “grow our way out” of its escalating debt-to-GDP ratio. This ongoing dialogue highlights a significant discussion regarding the sustainability of U.S. fiscal policy amidst growing financial obligations.
