A life insurance provider operating exclusively on Bitcoin has successfully secured $37.5 million in funding, bolstered by ongoing investments from notable backers. Understanding, which is based in Bermuda and counts OpenAI CEO Sam Altman among its supporters, has now amassed over $180 million in total funding.
The latest funding round was led by Bain Capital Crypto, with participation from a range of investors including Haun Ventures, Framework Ventures, Pantera Capital, Apollo, Northwestern Mutual Future Ventures, and Morgan Creek Digital, as detailed in an official announcement.
This financing initiative arrives in the context of heightened macroeconomic uncertainty across various regions, particularly in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, alongside a rising demand for Bitcoin-related life insurance solutions on an international scale, as per Thursday’s statement.
Zach Townsend, co-founder and CEO of Understanding, emphasized the growing need for regulated channels to facilitate the transfer of Bitcoin wealth among affluent families internationally. “Brokers approached us due to persistent inquiries from our customers,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of this funding round for meeting client demands.
Establishing Intergenerational Wealth with Bitcoin
In early 2026, Understanding introduced BTC Life 1-Pay, a single-premium whole life insurance policy designed specifically for high-net-worth clients residing outside the United States. This product follows the company’s inaugural offering, BTC 10-Pay, which targets U.S. taxpayers.
The insurance policies are structured to be held by individuals, trusts, or businesses, making them a viable option for estate planning and inheritance purposes. The company noted that its net long-term insurance underwriting income has already surpassed last year’s totals and is projected to more than double in 2026, although specific figures were not disclosed.
Additionally, in June, Cointelegraph reported that WTW, a global insurance brokerage and risk advisory firm, enhanced its service portfolio by acquiring the crypto insurance platform Redefind. This platform aims to establish a digital asset protection service, covering expenses associated with asset tracking, forensic investigations, and legal recourse following theft or loss.
Redefind provides coverage for digital assets across various custody arrangements, employing encrypted proof of ownership to ensure the verification of insured assets, further advancing financial security in the cryptocurrency space.
As the landscape for cryptocurrency and insurance continues to evolve, the potential for innovative financial products that cater to growing demands in this sector becomes increasingly apparent.
