Economists have raised alarms regarding the escalating costs associated with servicing global debt, highlighting the growing risks this poses to governments worldwide. Recent research from the Institute of International Finance (IIF) reveals that total global debt surged by $10 trillion in the first half of this year, surpassing an unprecedented $365 trillion.

The rise in state debt is particularly concerning as interest rates on medium- and long-term government bonds from major economies, including the United States, Japan, France, and the United Kingdom, have reached their highest levels in more than a decade. These rising yields indicate growing apprehensions among investors about the implications of increasing interest rates, ongoing energy cost pressures, sluggish economic growth, and substantial fiscal spending.

The IIF specifically pointed to these four economies as facing significant challenges similar to those traditionally encountered by debt-strapped emerging market nations, given their substantial deficits and rising interest payments.

In the past year alone, advanced economies collectively paid over $3.3 trillion in interest on internationally traded government bonds. This expenditure surpasses global investments in artificial intelligence ($2.6 trillion), defense ($3.1 trillion), and clean energy ($2.3 trillion).

This escalating debt situation has transitioned into a political issue, creating a “vicious cycle” where short-term, politically expedient fixes are prioritized over necessary long-term solutions. The IIF cautioned that as benchmark interest rates increase, associated interest expenses are projected to grow significantly, while structural challenges linked to healthcare and public pension systems remain largely unaddressed.

In a recent economic outlook, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) stressed the urgency for governments to contain and realign spending, enhance public sector efficiency, and boost revenue streams in response to rising bond yields.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also emphasized the need for reforms to secure long-term debt sustainability. Kristalina Georgieva, the IMF managing director, stressed, “There are these two things that must be done: bring debt levels down, put fiscal consolidation as a priority, and make sure that the central banks deliver on their mandate for price stability.” Georgieva highlighted the necessity for bravery in adopting critical but politically challenging measures to tackle the rising debt issue effectively.

As the global economy continues to face various shocks, the trend of increasing debt levels shows no signs of abating. The implications of these developments are significant, suggesting that countries must act decisively to manage their fiscal responsibilities before deeper crises evolve.
