As American companies anticipate an ongoing positive relationship with China, recent data indicates a significant uptick in orders placed for Chinese goods. This surge comes ahead of a crucial diplomatic summit and reflects an overall strategy to stabilize trade between the U.S. and the world’s second-largest economy.

According to the China Beige Book, a New York-based research firm, American firms have increased their imports from China, as evidenced by rising shipment figures both year-over-year and month-over-month. The survey, which included responses from 1,295 Chinese companies between September 1 and September 22, revealed a noteworthy rise in the gauge for U.S.-bound orders. This measure, determined by the discrepancy between firms reporting increased orders versus those reporting decreases, soared to +13 in September—up from -12 a year earlier and 3 in August.

Despite the increase, it is essential to note that overall orders, both domestic and exports, remain below the levels seen a year ago, with a decline in new orders since August. The spike in U.S. orders aligns with expectations for a more amicable outcome at the summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the latter’s first state visit to Washington in over ten years.

During their discussions, the two nations agreed to extend a tariff truce for two additional months, lasting until January. This agreement aims to maintain lower tariffs, suspend restrictions on rare earth exports, and prevent higher port fees on shipping. Reports suggest that the U.S. has also postponed a planned round of tariffs related to industrial overcapacity, alleviating immediate pressures on Chinese exports.

Currently, the effective tariff rate imposed by the U.S. on Chinese goods stands at approximately 23%, which is significantly higher than tariffs levied on other major trading partners, according to Barclays.

Supporting these trends, recent official statistics indicate that ports in China experienced their busiest week ever, further suggesting a rebound in trade flows ahead of the summit. Analysts at Eurasia Group have boosted their confidence regarding continued stability in U.S.-China relations, marking this as the highest likelihood since Trump took office. They attribute this to the shorter-than-expected extension of the tariff truce, suggesting it is unlikely to rekindle previous tensions.

“Neither government has an interest in renewed escalation,” stated Dan Wang, the China director at Eurasia Group. He anticipates that both nations will seek mutual commitments to uphold the current fragile stability. Areas of focus for the U.S. are likely to include faster Chinese approval of rare-earth export licenses for American firms and larger purchases of U.S. agricultural products. In exchange, Beijing is expected to ask for the U.S. to maintain its pause on arms sales to Taiwan.

Looking ahead, the two leaders are scheduled to reconvene at the upcoming APEC summit in Shenzhen in November, with potential discussions continuing on the sidelines of the G20 summit hosted in Miami in December. However, no subsequent bilateral meetings following this week’s summit have been confirmed.
