Trump Targets South Carolina Senate Candidate with Derogatory Language

Former President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by using an anti-transgender slur in reference to Democratic Senate candidate Annie Andrews during a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social. Trump referred to Andrews as “trannie” on three occasions and asserted that she does not represent the interests of South Carolina.

In his post, Trump urged voters to support Republican incumbent Senator Darline Graham, stating, “And South Carolina must show, in the upcoming Election, that it is not for her.” This remark comes as both parties gear up for critical midterm elections.

Andrews Responds to the Insult

In response to Trump’s remarks, Andrews chose to focus on her campaign’s goals rather than engage directly with the insult. She expressed her commitment to serving the people of South Carolina and emphasized her roles as a mother and pediatrician. “I’m in this race to fight for my patients, my three kids, and South Carolina,” Andrews said, highlighting her priority on lowering costs and improving the lives of families in the state. She concluded, “If you care more about your bills than the politics in Washington, this campaign is for you.”

Reaction from Political and Advocacy Groups

Trump’s comments received widespread backlash. The Human Rights Campaign, a significant LGBTQ advocacy organization, denounced the former president’s words as “sad, disgusting, [and] pathetic.” Ramiro Sarmiento, a spokesperson for the organization, noted that Trump’s remarks reflect his low approval ratings and signify a desperate attempt to rally support ahead of the elections.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer also condemned Trump’s attack, describing it as “despicable.” He praised Andrews as a dedicated community member who represents the kind of leadership South Carolina needs in the Senate.

Context of the Senate Race

Annie Andrews, who is a pediatrician, has been vocal about her stance on specific issues such as gender-affirming surgery for minors and the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports. Her candidacy follows the appointment of Senator Darline Graham, who took over her late brother’s Senate seat after the passing of Lindsey Graham earlier this year. Graham is fighting to retain her seat after successfully winning the Republican primary against Representative Ralph Norman by a narrow margin.

While South Carolina has not elected a Democratic senator in nearly thirty years, recent assessments by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report have shifted the race from “Solid Republican” to “Likely Republican,” indicating a more competitive landscape.
