The recall includes approximately 5.8 million stainless steel King Food jars and approximately 2.3 million Sportsman food and beverage bottles. According to a recall notice posted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on April 30, consumers should immediately stop using affected products.
Affected models include Thermos Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottle (all units, model SK3010). Food jars and food and beverage bottles: All units, models SK3000 (16 oz), SK3020 (24 oz), and SK3010 (40 oz). and Thermos Stainless King Food Jars manufactured before July 2023: Models SK3000 and SK3020.
The model number is listed at the bottom of the product.
This hazard is due to a design flaw in the stopper, a component that retains heat and prevents leakage. When fresh foods and drinks are stored for long periods of time, the pressure builds up and the stopper may pop out when opening the container. Unlike safer designs, the stopper in the recalled models does not have a pressure relief valve.
Thermos said it has received 27 reports of consumers hitting the protruding stoppers, including injuries requiring medical attention. Three consumers reported experiencing permanent vision loss after receiving an impact to the eye.
The recalled products were sold at Walmart, Target, Amazon, and Thermos.com from March 2008 to July 2024. They come in a variety of colors and feature the Thermos trademark on the side.
Owners of SK3000 and SK3020 food jars must discard the stopper and provide Thermos with a photo of the discard. Owners of SK3010 bottles must return the product using a prepaid shipping label provided by the company.
